NHS board backs new hospital proposal

The NHS North of Tyne Commissioning Board has given its support to a proposed new emergency hospital near Cramlington.
At a meeting held yesterday evening, the panel said it would give the plans the go-ahead once a number of issues have been dealt with, such as public transport access.
Chris Reid, chief executive of NHS North Tyne, said a "cautious welcome" had been given to the development proposals.
"On balance, the consultation has shown support for this development with the majority of people recognising the benefits for patients as a result of seeing the right specialist at a very early stage," he added.
The board has also welcomed plans to upgrade the North Tyneside and Wansbeck general hospitals – a move that could see the creation of more hospital doctor jobs in the area.
In related news, NHS East of England announced earlier this week that it is inviting organisations from the private and public sectors to bid to run Hinchingbrooke Hospital from 2011.
