Refer an Speech and Language Therapist
Monday 24th August 2009
A speech therapist has helped a multiple sclerosis (MS) sufferer regain a greater level of independence, it has emerged.
According to reports in the Swindon Advertiser, Chris Sharpe was introduced to the idea of using a communication aid that enables people with mobility problems to use the internet by a medical expert at Frenchay Hospital.
The speech therapist put her in touch with Speakeasier, a charity that funds communication aids for people with MS.
Speakeasier subsequently paid for a speech recognition computer to be installed in Ms Sharpe's home.
She commented: "It's difficult to articulate what it means to me to have a PC that I can use independently without having to ask another human for help."
Ms Sharpe added that her life has "improved immeasurably" as a result of the development.
A neurological condition, MS can occur at any age but in the majority of cases, symptoms emerge in patients ranging from 20 to 40 years old.
