Refer an Hospital Doctor
Wednesday 19th August 2009
The number of people who died from hospital super bugs such as MRSA dropped between 2007 and 2008, it has been revealed.
According to figures published by the Office for National Statistics, fatalities associated with Clostridium difficile fell by 29 per cent news that may be of interest to those searching for hospital doctor jobs.
Chief nursing officer Christine Beasley said that reducing healthcare-associated infections is a major priority for the government.
"Whilst one avoidable infection is one too many, today's figures show we are seeing significant reductions in cases," she added.
The figures show that between 2004 and 2008, MRSA was involved in three deaths in every 1,000 in England and Wales.
Commenting on the figures, shadow health secretary Andrew Lansley said that although the decrease is welcome, there is still an "appalling" number of people dying every year from preventable infections.
In related news, it was reported last week that new strains of a drug-resistant bacteria have been discovered.
