Those searching for UK medical jobs may be interested to learn that the government has announced plans to open a new centre for proton therapy.
Hospitals in England have now been invited to bid for the new centre.
The country currently has one other proton therapy unit. However, it is only suitable for those with certain eye cancers.
Commenting on the announcement, health minister Ann Keen said the government is keen to ensure that the country's cancer services are world-class.
"This is significant news for patients with rare cancers, especially children, as having proton beam therapy will mean that they will receive a better quality of treatment and will not suffer from potential side effects such as hearing loss and reduced IQ," she stated.
Proton beam therapy, which is especially useful in treating children, is currently used in the US and other European countries to target spinal cord tumours and sarcomas near the spine and brain.
