A new vaccine could lead to a transformation in the way heart disease is treated, it has been claimed.
Researchers from Lund University in Sweden and the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles are working on the jab, which could be available in four to five years, the Daily Mail reports.
The treatment works by reversing the narrowing of the arteries and trials are due to take place next spring. It prevents patients' immune systems becoming aggressive and causing inflammation of the arteries.
Produced by Cardiovax, the CVX-210H vaccine will initially be offered to high-risk patients.
However, Professor Jan Nilsson of Lund University said: "One day we may even be able to offer it to everyone to prevent them developing heart disease."
Recently, the British Heart Foundation claimed that some cardiac patients could be missing out on mental health support.
It cited figures suggesting that up to 20 per cent of people who have acute cardiac episodes go on to suffer a major depressive episode within a few weeks.
