Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Thursday 6th August 2009
Cardiac specialists at Evelina children's hospital in London recently performed a procedure usually reserved for older patients on a two-year-old.
Last year, Charlie Greenwood was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy - a condition which causes damage to the heart muscle.
He subsequently had to undergo a seven-hour double bypass graft operation.
The youngster's mother, Kirsty Langdale, said: "It was a horrendous time for us. It all happened so quickly. I knew he wasn't right but we weren't prepared for that," the Argus reports.
Since the procedure, Charlie has recovered well and, according to his mother, he enjoys normal activities such as playing in the park.
However, he has to have regular scans and his parents have to keep a close eye on him because he needs the blood thinning drug warfarin.
Part of Guy's and St Thomas', Evelina children's hospital was constructed for a total cost of £60 million and it houses 140 inpatient beds.
