Register as an Dietitian
Thursday 6th August 2009
A dietician has welcomed new research which suggests that eating oily fish can reduce the risks of heart failure by a third.
The study, which was conducted by a team at the Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, examined 30 years of research and found that consuming 500mg of such oil a day can reduce the risks to healthy people of developing cardiac problems.
Meanwhile, people with existing heart problems should take at least 800 to 1,000mg of the substance per day, the team recommended.
Responding to the study, Linda Main, dietician at the British Heart Foundation, said: "These findings could be a radical way of cutting heart attacks."
However, she went on to warn that adding omega 3 to a diet needs to be coupled with general healthy eating.
Last month, Helen Mercer, a dietician at Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham, claimed that people in the UK mistakenly believe that healthy food is necessarily more expensive than processed produce, the BBC reported.
