Phlebotomists and podiatrists are among the medical professionals starting work in a new care village in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Named Mill Rise, the facility provides housing for the over 55s as well as a range of medical services, 24dash reports.

Developed on the site of a former factory, the village is the product of a collaboration between local improvement finance trust Prima 200 North Staffordshire, Aspire Housing and North Staffordshire Primary Care Trust (PCT), which provides services to more than 210,000 people.

Costing around £15 million, the facility is designed to enable older people to maintain an independent lifestyle with vital services nearby and to avoid the feelings of isolation that can sometimes be felt by people living in specialist accommodation.

In addition, it will provide healthcare services to around 5,000 people living in the communities of Knutton and Cross Heath.

It is said to be one of the first such schemes to have been constructed outside London.
