New biomedical research centre opened

A new centre for biomedical research has been officially opened.
Recently, Lord Drayson, minister for science and innovation, attended an event marking the launch of the Babraham Institute's new facility.
Costing £22 million, the Biological Support Unit is intended to further the UK's ability to study the mechanisms behind normal cellular functions and how their failure may result in disease.
Commenting on the development, Lord Drayson said: "This state-of-the-art facility will be vital, increasing the likelihood of scientific breakthroughs whilst ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare."
Meanwhile, Babraham's director professor Michael Wakelam added that the centre will enable its scientists to remain at the "forefront" of global biomedical research.
It was constructed with support from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and its design incorporates innovative features, with an emphasis on high-tech automation and robotics.
An independent charitable life sciences organisation, the Babraham Institute undertakes research and advanced training in the fields of biomedicine, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and other healthcare communities.
