Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Monday 3rd August 2009
The death rates among patients who have undergone cardiac operations have fallen, new figures reveal.
Published by the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the statistics show that death rates in coronary artery surgery have decreased by just one-fifth, while aortic valve replacement patients saw a drop of one-third in terms of fatalities.
The data was based on 400,000 operations conducted over the last five years.
Responding to the findings, Mike Knapton of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) welcomed them but said they also show that there exist variations in access to some types of operation depending on where patients live in England.
He added: "If we are to tackle these inequalities and meet the needs of an increasingly elderly and obese population, we need a robust strategy to meet the future demand for cardiac surgery."
Employing more than 400 heart nurses, the BHF focuses on investing in research, supporting and caring for heart patients and providing information to people to help them avoid cardiac illnesses.
