Biomedical scientists have been successful in their attempts to create skin-like material from human embryonic stem cells (HESC).
A team from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences in the US generated multilayer tissues that mimic human skin and moist tissue that lines the inside of the mouth.
According to Jonathan Garlick, professor of oral and maxillofacial pathology at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, the development proves that a single source of HESC can provide the multiple cell types needed to create multilayer tissues.
He added: "These engineered tissues are remarkably similar to their human counterparts and can be used to address major concerns facing the field of stem cell biology that are related to their clinical use."
Recently, a new centre for biomedical research was established in Wales.
Based at Cardiff University, the Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics will focus on mental health issues such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, the BBC reported.
