A stroke victim has spoken of how speech therapy transformed his life.
According to reports in the Daily Mail, Nick Brittain was told he was unlikely to speak again after the medical event.
While his memory had not been affected by the stroke, he was unable to recognise words due to the damage he sustained to some cells in the left side of his brain.
The 69-year-old was suffering from aphasia, which is a symptom experienced by around a fifth of all stroke victims, according to NHS figures.
Thanks to a technique which incorporated making stickers labelling household objects and writing lists of words which he stuck to walls, he managed to defy the odds and regain his language skills.
He also underwent around 150 speech therapy sessions and used a technique called Samonas, which uses music and the sounds of nature to stimulate brain cells and help patients relax.
Today, his language has been largely recovered and people meeting him for the first time have no idea that he once lost his ability to communicate.
