A hospital chief has said that new figures showing incidences of MRSA have fallen are good but further improvements need to be made.
Figures released by the Universities of Morecombe Bay Trust show that five cases of the superbug had been detected in its medical centres since the beginning of April, the North-West Evening Mail reports.
This is a reduction from the 13 recorded during the same period last year. However, it is above the trust's interim target of one case a month and its ultimate goal of no cases.
Director of infection prevention and control at the organisation said: "In June we had two cases of MRSA.
"The June target was one, which brings us to the end of quarter one with five cases, compared to 13 in the same period last year. This is an improvement but still not good enough."
She added that staff and public awareness programmes are ongoing at the trust's hospitals and hand-washing stations are positioned at the entrance to each ward.
The Universities of Morecombe Bay Trust operates the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, the Westmorland General Hospital and the Furness General Hospital.
