UK pharmacists have been issued new advice concerning smoking cessation services.
Intended for senior NHS clinicians and managers responsible for commissioning pharmaceutical services, the information has been supplied by NHS Employers.
It is intended to strengthen the role of pharmacies in helping people stop smoking.
Taryn Harding, deputy head of primary care workforce and contracting at NHS Employers, stated: "Smoking remains the single greatest cause of preventable morbidity and premature deaths in England [and] it's also expensive to treat.
"However, smoking cessation could deliver net savings of £25 million annually when the impact on length of stay and waiting times is considered."
She added that the role of pharmacies in communities means that such organisations must be at the centre of efforts to reduce smoking levels.
Representing trusts in England, NHS Employers aims to ensure that the NHS is a desirable place for medical professionals to work.
It works with employers and represents their views in a range of areas, including pay and recruitment.
