Access control installed in sterile services unit

The sterile services unit at King George Hospital has had controlled access installed.
Responsible for the cleaning, sterilising, checking, packing and distribution of medical equipment at the medical centre, the department is under the control of Barking, Havering and Redbridge hospitals NHS Trust.
The decision to have the additional safety measures installed was made by Jim Harold, security manager for the trust, SourceSecurity.com reports.
He said: "It is important that we ensure access to the building is restricted to staff only. We are not prepared to risk outsiders entering and contaminating any of our clean areas, sterile equipment or interfering with our systems."
Mr Harold added that the service is audited regularly to ensure that it meets high standards and to make sure that traceability is maintained.
Serving a population of around 700,000, Barking, Havering and Redbridge hospitals NHS Trust describes itself as one of the largest acute hospital trusts in England.
