Medics have successfully conducted a procedure to correct a spinal condition which had pushed a girl's heart out of position.
Koryn McFadden was involved in a car crash in 2006 and doctors noticed she had scoliosis - a curvature of the spine - while examining X-rays.
The condition, which was getting progressively worse, had pushed the 18-year-old's heart three inches to the right.
Medics responsible for the treatment said that the organ should now remain in place.
During an eight-hour operation, surgeons inserted two titanium rods and ten metal pins into Ms McFadden's spine.
The operation was conducted at Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham, which is run by the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
Commenting on the medical condition, a spokeswoman for the Scoliosis Association said: "If scoliosis goes untreated, it will cause massive effects on heart function and reduce breathing capacity because the lungs are getting smaller," the BBC reports.
