Register as an Dietitian
Tuesday 21st July 2009
People in the UK mistakenly believe that healthy food is necessarily more expensive than processed produce, a medical expert has claimed.
According to Helen Mercer, a dietician at Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham, poor diets are contributing to rising obesity levels, the BBC reports.
She said: "I think there is a common misconception that healthy food is more expensive.
"I think we have to do a lot of work with people to try and improve their confidence, to feel that they can prepare food from fresh ingredients without using processed foods."
Ms Mercer made her comments following the release of figures produced by the NHS which revealed that at least a fifth of 11-year-old children in five West Midlands boroughs are obese.
This is slightly above the national average for England of 18.3 per cent.
Recently, Ursula Arens, a dietician at the British Dietetic Association, recommended that people eat "plain and simple" food, Bounty reported.
