Hospitals in the UK will have to cope with an increasing number of patients who have contracted swine flu, it has been suggested.
New figures produced by the Department of Health reveal that the number of people fearing they had contracted the illness had risen by around half last week.
In addition, the death toll is increasing, with Scottish health secretary Nicola Sturgeon recently announcing another fatality.
The politician said that a female tourist suffering from the condition had died in hospital.
Meanwhile, chief medical officer for England Liam Donaldson recently warned that a third of the UK's population could catch swine flu this winter and the virus could remain in the country for up to five years.
In addition, by the end of August up to nine per cent of the workforce may have the illness, rising to 12 per cent over the winter.
According to the government, it is the under-fives and those aged between five and 14 who are the most affected.
