Most pharmacists operating in Scotland are trialling a new service which enables doctors to send prescriptions to them electronically.
According to the Scottish government, the electronic Acute Medication Service (eAMS) - is being used by 99 per cent of GPs and pharmacists in the country.
The use of the electronic system is designed to reduce the risk of errors in communication and to boost efficiency.
Health secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "We have a very successful prescribing system in Scotland, with around one million paper prescriptions written by GPs every week and dispensed in community pharmacies."
However, more can always achieved and this is the hope with the eAMS system, she added.
Ms Sturgeon, who is the MSP for Glasgow Govan, went on to say that more than 90 per cent of prescriptions submitted in the country are now done electronically.
This, she continued, shows the demand among pharmacists and GPs to make the most of the latest technology in order to improve services for patients.
