Calls made for new biomedical research centre

A politician has called for the establishment of a new biomedical research centre to investigate asbestos-related lung disease.
According to Leeds West MP John Battle, the Department of Health should raise its investment in research into the health conditions caused by the hazardous insulating material, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports.
There are a number of health conditions related to asbestos, including pleural plaques, asbestosis, mesothelioma and asbestos-related lung cancer.
Over 20,000 people have signed a petition pushing for the creation of a new research centre.
Mr Battle said: "There is no reason why it shouldn't be in Leeds. We have got a good cancer unit and a good medical school."
He added that there is going to be a "massive increase" in mesothelioma cases over the next two decades and the government should therefore step up its investment now.
The politician is to put pressure on health secretary Andy Burnham in a bid to get the research centre set up.
