A new centre for biomedical research has been established in Wales.
Based at Cardiff University, the £4 million Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics is to focus on mental health issues such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, the BBC reports.
Commenting on the facility, which will also look into degenerative brain disorders like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, its director Professor Mike Owen said it should help reduce the stigma attached to mental health problems.
He added: "The stigma is still there. But when people see these are diseases like physical diseases the stigma starts to go."
Approval for the establishment of the centre was given by the Medical Research Council (MRC) and it is the first of its research facilities which will use genetics as part of its research into mental disorders.
Working with the NHS and UK health departments, the MRC aims to improve human health through world-class medical research.
