Managers in a UK hospital have been attempting to reassure patients over hygiene standards after reports emerged that people had been drinking alcoholic hand gel.
According to the Dorset Echo, bosses at Dorset County Hospital had removed dispensers amid fears that some people were deliberately ingesting the substance.
However, Alison Tong, director of nursing and infection prevention and control at the medical centre, said that no final decision regarding the dispensers had been reached.
She said: "Following the story regarding hand gel at Dorset County Hospital we would like to make it very clear that we currently have no plans to remove the hand gel dispensers from the main entrances of the hospital."
Ms Tong added that staff members at the centre encourage visitors to gel or wash their hands at the entrances to wards or by patient's bedsides.
Established in 1991, Dorset County Hospital was designed to bring together all local services for acutely ill patients on to one site.
