People with cardiac jobs in a UK hospital are to trial a new device.
Staff at Russells Hall Hospital will begin using the Subcutaneous Implantable Defibrillator, which is designed to prolong the lives of patients who are at risk of sudden cardiac arrest, the Dudley News reports.
The device is implanted into patients under the skin into a pocket under the arm and directly into the heart chambers, rather than via a blood vessel.
The surgeon conducting the procedures is consultant Dr Craig Barr.
He commented: "These devices reduce the risk of infection and complications with the blood vessels and will prolong the lives of patients at risk of sudden cardiac arrest."
Dr Barr added that it is "very exciting" that Russells Hall Hospital has been selected as the first place in the UK to trial the devices.
The medical centre is run by the Dudley Group of Hospitals NHS Trust, which provides services to around 400,000 people.
