Register as an Dietitian
Thursday 2nd July 2009
People trying to adopt a healthy diet should go for simple food, it has been suggested.
Commenting on the issue, Ursula Arens, a dietician at the British Dietetic Association, said that healthy eating should encompass food that is "plain and simple", Bounty reports.
She made her comments in the wake of research conducted by Mintel, which found that people in the UK are returning to traditional healthy diets rich in fruit and vegetables in favour of taking vitamin supplements.
According to the study, 38 per cent of adults polled preferred to eat a healthy diet instead of taking pills to boost their intake of vitamins.
This represents a rise compared with the 25 per cent recorded in 2005.
"As people eat more healthily, they do not feel that they need to take additional vitamins and minerals from supplements," stated senior health and beauty analyst Alexandra Richmond.
Last month, dietician Claire Holmes participated in a campaign to get people to pay more attention to the amounts of salt and sugar that are in their food, the Derry Journal reported.
