An NHS trust from the north of England has been praised for its levels of hygiene.
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was ranked by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) as the best-performing trust in the country for tackling infections.
The agency found that the number of MRSA bloodstream infections fell 63 per cent in 2008-09 compared with the previous year.
Meanwhile, the number of trust-apportioned Clostridium difficile cases fell from 315 to 175 over the period.
Responding to the figures, Tony Curtis, chief executive of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: "This is a fantastic performance and I would like to congratulate staff for the manner in which they have embraced our new infection control regime and met their responsibilities in preventing infections."
Formed in 2002, the trust provides services to around 370,000 people and runs both Chorley and South Ribble Hospital and the Royal Preston Hospital.
