A biomedical researcher in the UK has been bestowed with a prestigious prize.
Dr Grant Stewart recently picked up the Lister Institute Research Prize.
As a result, he will have access to funding of £200,000 over five years in order to further studies into how cells recognise and repair different types of DNA damage.
Commenting on his achievement, Dr Stewart said: "This research grant will help us answer intriguing questions that will give us insight into some of the underlying causes of cancer."
He added that he is "thrilled" to have been awarded the prize.
The money will finance a post-doctoral research fellow for three years to investigate the role of a protein found in humans which is involved in the pathways that repair double strand DNA breaks.
Dr Stewart is based at the Cancer Research UK Institute for Cancer Studies at the University of Birmingham, which is located in the Edgbaston area of the city.
