Hospitals in Sunderland praised over hygiene

Hospitals in Sunderland have received praise for their hygiene standards.
According to figures produced by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), the number of cases of MRSA in hospitals run by City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust fell to 34 between April 2008 and March this year.
Meanwhile, cases of Clostridium difficile fell from 424 in 2007-08 to 302 over the last year.
Among the measures which have been adopted by medical centres run by the trust are the fitting of hi-tech air disinfection units and carwash-style bed cleaners.
Mike Catchpole, deputy director of the HPA's Centre for Infections, said: "The substantial drop we have seen in MRSA bloodstream infections and C difficile over the past year is impressive and a credit to the hard work of our colleagues in the NHS, strengthening good practice in infection control."
An independent organisation, the HPA was established in 2003 to protect the public from threats to their health arising from infectious diseases and environmental hazards.
