Refer an Audiologist
Wednesday 24th June 2009
An audiologist may have been responsible for saving the life of a patient, according to reports in the Knutsford Guardian.
Michael Boalch went for a hearing test in a Specsavers in Northwich after seeing a poster advertising free examinations.
During the test, audiologist Lee Dean noticed that the patient's hearing in his left ear was significantly worse than it was in his right one.
He passed the information on to Mr Boalch's doctor, who confirmed that problem and referred him to Wythenshawe Hospital, which is run by the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust.
The patient was subsequently diagnosed with cholesteatoma, a condition which causes destructive growths to appear in the ear canal and can lead to serious conditions if left untreated.
Mr Boalch stated: "I dread to think about what might have happened if I hadn't made the appointment."
He added: "It could have been very dangerous in later years, which was quite frightening really."
