City workers at increased risk of health problems, cardiac expert says

As a result of the ongoing economic downturn, people with jobs in the City are at an increased risk of developing health problems connected with their hearts.
This was the claim made by cardiac specialist Dr Richard Schilling from Barts and the London NHS Trust, who said he had seen a rise in younger patients with heart conditions triggered by excessive drinking, This is London reports.
He stated: "Workers in the City are under a lot more stress because they're having to work harder. They're at risk because they use alcohol to relax themselves. People drink more when they are stressed."
Dr Schilling went on to say that while the risk of developing conditions such as cardiac arrhythmia is greatest among people aged 70 and over, he has seen patients in their forties and fifties, including City bankers and brokers.
The medical expert is supporting a campaign being organised by the Arrhythmia Alliance to encourage people to check their pulses at least once every six months.
A coalition, the Arrhythmia Alliance comprises individuals, patient groups, charities and medical groups.
