New MRI scanner available in Berkshire

A new piece of radiography equipment is now available in west Berkshire.
The device, which cost £1 million, was launched at West Berkshire Community Hospital, the Newbury Weekly News Group reports.
GPs operating in the area will be able to book patients in for a scan on the machine without any referral from a consultant.
For three days a week, the scanner will be used at Thatcham hospital - which is run by NHS Berkshire West - and for the rest of the time, it will be based in other locations.
According to lead MRI radiographer Fungai Makusha, the most frequent scans conducted are on knees, brains and spines.
She added: "It makes a lot of noise so we give the patients earphones to play them music, this is to allay their fears.
"Some people come in with friends if they are a bit anxious but we check the friends to make sure they are safe to go in."
