Register as an Dietitian
Monday 22nd June 2009
A growing number of children are being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, a medical expert has said.
Katy McMillan, a dietician with NHS Lincolnshire, made her comments in the wake of figures which suggest that nearly one in ten youngsters aged under five in Lincolnshire are clinically obese.
Cited by the Lincolnshire Echo, the statistics also reveal that 9.6 per cent of children are very overweight by the time they reach school age.
This rises to 17.9 per cent by the time they reach Year 6.
Ms McMillan said: "We're now seeing children being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes which, previously, was considered to be an adult illness."
Last month, independent dietician Carrie Ruxton issued a warning concerning vitamin D.
She claimed that only four in ten people in the UK are getting enough foods rich in the substance, the Daily Mail reported.
Vitamin D can help to reduce the risk of developing a number of medical complaints, including bone thinning and heart disease.
