Merseyside hospital staff praised for hygiene campaign

A campaign run by staff at a hospital in Merseyside has been praised for its success in reducing cases of C difficile.
As part of the initiative, a new isolation ward was created, along with extra cleaning and more education and training on infection prevention and control for staff, Click Liverpool reports.
In addition, changes were made to the prescribing of antibiotics and new stations for hand washing were introduced.
Due to the campaign, cases of C difficile have dropped over the last six months.
Whereas there were 85 cases between December 2008 and January of this year, the number fell to 71 cases between February and March and to 29 between April and May.
Jim Birrell, chief executive of Aintree University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: "Staff should be proud of their efforts, which have significantly reduced the number of C difficile cases we are seeing. We are now in line with our hospital trajectory."
Established in August 2006, the health trust serves a population of 330,000 in north Merseyside.
