A team of biomedical researchers have had a breakthrough in their work involving hormones.
The experts, who are based in the Universities of Manchester and Birmingham, believe they have solved a genetic problem that causes the accumulation of male hormones in women.
Called androgens, they are associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
Thought to be suffered by around one in ten women in the UK, PCOS is a condition which affects fertility.
The researchers identified a defect in the pathway for making steroid hormones in the adrenal gland.
Commenting on the achievement, Professor Neil Hanley from the National Institute for Health Research Manchester Biomedical Research Centre said: "What is particularly rewarding about this research is that it is part of a much bigger ongoing interaction between my group in Manchester and the Birmingham team of Professor Wiebke Arlt."
According to the NHS, PCOS is currently recognised as the most common cause of ovulation failure leading to infertility among women who have not yet reached the menopause.
