Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Tuesday 16th June 2009
There is currently insufficient capacity to meet present or anticipated future needs for inherited cardiovascular conditions (ICCs) in the UK, a report has claimed.
Such conditions are a group of genetic disorders that affect the heart and blood vessels.
According to the report, which was produced by the Foundation for Genomics and Population Health, there are serious inequalities in the standard and quantity of care available to patients in different parts of the country.
It made a number of recommendations, including that every UK cardiac network should ensure that its population has access to expert ICC services.
In addition, cardiac networks should develop agreed minimum standards for the provision of and access to specialist ICC services.
The report authors also suggested that legal changes should be sought in order to ensure appropriate retention and handling of tissue samples following sudden cardiac death.
A non-profit organisation, the Foundation for Genomics and Population Health focuses on the translation of science for the purposes of improving health.
