New appointment made to improve hospital hygiene

In a bid to improve hospital hygiene in the country, health bosses in Scotland have appointed a new inspector.
Susan Brimelow will lead the Healthcare Environment Inspectorate, which is a recently-established body with responsibility to inspect medical centres to ensure the highest standards of infection prevention and cleanliness.
The organisation will have an annual budget of more than £1 million and it will operate independently of the Scottish government and the country's NHS boards.
Commenting on the development, health secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "Through a programme of planned and random visits, the Healthcare Environment Inspectorate's stringent independent regime will ensure the public can have confidence in the care provided in our hospitals."
She added that she is sure that Ms Brimelow's strategic vision and strong leadership abilities will benefit the inspectorate.
Ms Brimelow joins the organisation from the Care Commission, where she performed the role of director of healthcare regulation.
