Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Friday 12th June 2009
A late cardiologist has been recognised with the unveiling of a portrait, the BBC reports.
Professor Frank Pantridge, who died in 2004, was famed for a number of achievements, including the invention of the portable defibrillator.
Such devices are used to administer electric shocks to patients who have suffered heart attacks.
He was also commended for the contributions he made during World War II.
During a recent ceremony, his friend Dr Jack Kyle uncovered the artwork in Queen's University.
Meanwhile, chair of the Frank Pantridge Portrait Committee Professor John Morison said: "We are delighted with the portrait which commemorates Professor Pantridge's achievements and makes a fine addition to the pieces in the Great Hall."
He went on to thank the "generous donations" from across the world that the committee received which saw it exceed its target for the artwork and consequently donate the additional money to cardiac research.
The painting was produced by Belfast-based artist Martin Wedge.
