Pharmacists working for NHS Mid Essex are to offer a range of drugs for free to patients who are on low incomes.
Under the terms of an agreement reached between the health trust and pharmacies in the Braintree and Witham areas, the medicines will be available over the counter at no cost to eligible individuals.
The drugs on offer through the scheme are products which treat self-limiting conditions, such as mouth ulcers and dermatitis.
NHS Mid Essex is to cover the cost of the initiative.
Chief pharmacist at the organisation Paula Wilkinson said: "We are committed to ensuring that families with low incomes have access to the required medicines from community pharmacies, without the need to visit their GP for a prescription."
She added that the trust will be monitoring the uptake of the scheme to minimise fraud.
Established in October 2006, NHS Mid Essex serves a population of around 360,000 living in the Braintree, Chelmsford and Maldon areas.
