Register as an Dietitian
Thursday 11th June 2009
Computer games play a role in contributing to childhood obesity, a paediatric dietician has said.
According to Jacqui Lowdon from the British Dietetic Association (BDA), a combination of such games, poor diets and fizzy drinks are behind the escalation in weight problems.
She said: "It's definitely on the increase. We are seeing more children referred to us, all overweight. It seems to be happening at a younger age as well.
"It's about increasing activity levels, as well as diets. Often children are not active enough."
She added that children are often driven to school rather than walking there and they tend not to play outside after school.
Ms Lowdon went on to claim that there are no good or bad foods for youngsters, only "bad diets".
Established in 1936, the BDA is the professional association for dieticians.
It aims to advance the science and practice of dieticians, promote education and training and regulate relations between industry practitioners and their employers.
