Tuesday 9th June 2009
Experts in cardiology are to take part in an awareness raising campaign to coincide with Arrhythmia Awareness Week.
The initiative was first run in 2004 and it aims to make people more aware of heart rhythm disorders.
As part of the week, which runs from June 8th until June 14th, the Know Your Pulse campaign is being promoted.
Among the medical centres involved in the project is St George's Hospital in Tooting, which is encouraging visitors to check their pulses.
Michael Sampson, specialist at St George's Hospital, said: "We are encouraging members of the public to have a better idea of what their 'normal' pulse is and to regularly check their pulse so that they can identify if there is anything unusual about it in the future."
He added that knowing one's pulse rate is one of the most effective ways of discovering cardiac arrhythmia.
Some arrhythmias can lead to such health problems as loss of consciousness, strokes and cardiac arrest.
