Pharmacists in Hull are involved in a campaign being led by the local NHS trust to cut the amount of prescription medicines going to waste.
The initiative was launched after it was discovered that unused drugs are costing the health service in the area nearly £2 million, the Yorkshire Post reports.
In an eight-week publicity campaign, staff in the city's pharmacies are handing out leaflets with every prescription they issue highlighting the problem of wasted medication.
Commenting on the issue, senior pharmacist for NHS Hull Emma Baggaley said: "The main message is for patients to only order the medication they need and if they have any concerns they can have a medicines review at the community pharmacy or the GP surgery."
She added that wasted medicines mean wasted money and any drugs which are handed out but are not taken cannot be used again.
Formally known as Hull Teaching Primary Care Trust, NHS Hull serves a population of 250,000.
