A report forecasting that the majority of doctors will be women in around eight years' time shows overall recruitment into UK medical jobs is increasing, rather than an expected decline in the number of male doctors, an expert has claimed.
Jane Dacre, a professor of medical education at University College London and chair of the working group that produced the study for the Royal College of Physicians, said that women "may now be playing catch up" after possibly being prevented from entering medicine in the past.
However, she added, there had been no let-up in the number of men looking to become doctors.
"There are more men entering the medical profession than ever before, it is only that there are even more women," Professor Dacre remarked.
According to the Royal College of Physicians' study, women will make up the majority of GPs by 2013 and will go on to make up the majority of doctors as a whole "some time after 2017".
