A Maltese pharmacist who is internationally-recognised for her expertise in preventing and controlling MRSA infections is to join a Department of Health team to promote better hospital cleanliness, according to reports.
The Maltese Independent states that Dr Christianne Micallef, the lead pharmacist for infection prevention and control at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in King's Lynn, Norfolk, will use the role to pass on her knowledge to hospitals around the UK.
Dr Micallef, who has written a number of papers on infection control for medical journals, splits her time at QEH between practical pharmacy work and dealing with infection control in the isolation ward where superbug patients are treated, it adds.
She said it is the infection control team's responsibility to ensure patients "receive optimal care and treatment" to aid a full recovery.
"It is important for me to know that what I am doing will have a positive impact which will help our patients," Dr Micallef added.
Dr Micallef studied for her PhD in Malta and the UK.
