Women will make up the majority of all doctors working in the UK "sometime after 2017", according to a two-year study from the Royal College of Physicians.
The report said women currently make up 40 per cent of doctors, 42 per cent of GPs and 28 per cent of consultants.
It added that the shifting gender balance within UK medical jobs will have implications for workforce design in the NHS.
The study said women are more likely to work part-time and flexible hours. Female doctors are also more likely to concentrate on specialities and generally prefer relatively higher levels of patient interaction.
Professor Jane Dacre of the Royal College of Physicians' working group said: "The combination of these changes ... will need to be examined to ensure the continued delivery of high-quality care and the best use of the considerable talent available in today's medical profession."
Commenting on the report, John Black, president of the Royal College of Surgeons, said it provides a "thorough, independent and objective" analysis of the "profound" changes underway in the UK's medical workforce.
