The NHS could see staff absentee rates as high as 85 per cent if the UK was caught up in an influenza pandemic, a study has revealed.
According to the poll of 3,000 healthcare workers based in the west Midlands carried out by BMC Public Health, the illness of a child or partner would be among the most likely factors affecting NHS employees' attendance, the Pharmaceutical Journal reports.
Other issues seen as key influences in workers' ability or will to attend work included self-risk, disruption to transport, school closures, extra duties, untrained colleagues and longer hours.
Respondents to the study said the offer of a vaccination for themselves and their families was the factor most likely to have a positive impact on attendance.
They also said being able to work flexible hours, working closer to home and the provision of childcare or accommodation would help to keep them working.
BCM Public Health said the report's figures indicate that absenteeism among healthcare professionals could be "considerably higher" than official estimates and contingency plans may have to drawn up to ensure the health service can cope with any staff shortages.
