Hospital admits hygiene failures

A UK hospital has admitted breaching hygiene regulations, it has emerged.
Following a self-assessment which it conducted in order to achieve its Annual Health Check (AHC) rating, Derriford Hospital announced it had not met the necessary standards in cleanliness and infection control, as well as the decontamination of re-usable medical devices.
The AHC is an assessment of the quality of service and use of resources achieved by health organisations.
Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust's failings follow spot checks conducted over recent months by independent inspectors which revealed that Derriford Hospital had committed eight breaches of the national hygiene code.
A spokesperson for the organisation said: "Although we had made significant improvements between the inspections, this was extremely disappointing.
"Our patients have a right to expect good quality care in a clean environment and wards not coming up to scratch on cleanliness is not acceptable."
The NHS trust has action plans in place to ensure that the issues are being addressed.
Providing a range of medical services, Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust serves a population of around 460,000.
