Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Friday 22nd May 2009
An appeal to raise money to fund further research into cardiac health has been launched in Scotland.
Organisers of the Heart of Discovery initiative hope to collect £100,000 to finance a study examining sudden cardiac deaths.
The research team is being led by Professor Allan Struthers from Dundee University's department of pharmacology and therapeutics.
They are developing new ways of identifying the disease by means of a blood test.
Heart of Discovery appeal manager Ffyonna Scott said: "Despite everything we do to tackle the most common risk factors for heart disease - smoking, blood pressure and cholesterol - thousands of apparently healthy people die suddenly and unexpectedly every year, causing great distress to their loved ones."
The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is providing most of the finances for the study.
Claiming to invest more than £137 a minute on cardiac research, the BHF aims to reduce the number of people who die prematurely of heart disease.
