Register as an Dietitian
Tuesday 19th May 2009
The levels of vitamin D being consumed by people in the UK have dropped sharply, a dietician said.
According to Dr Carrie Ruxton, an independent dietician and the author of a new report on the issue, only one in four people are eating enough foods rich in the substance, the Daily Mail reports.
Vitamin D can help to reduce the risk of developing cancer, diabetes, heart disease and bone thinning.
Dr Ruxton said: "For a combination of reasons, the problem of vitamin D deficiency has probably never been worse."
Her report suggested that the obesity epidemic is making shortfalls of the vitamin worse because it becomes trapped in body fat, which stops it circulating around in the blood.
Published in the Journal of the British Nutrition Foundation, the study indicated that 71 per cent of men and 78 per cent of women failed to reach the European Union recommended intake of vitamin D of five micrograms a day.
According to the NHS, some people - including pregnant women, those on special diets and elderly people - should be particularly aware of their vitamin needs, as they may be greater than average patients.
