Refer an Audiologist
Thursday 14th May 2009
An audiology department in a UK hospital is to make use of text messages.
Medical professionals at Colchester Hospital are to send such messages to remind deaf patients about appointments, Colchester and north Essex paper the Gazette reports.
The scheme, which is being run by Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust, will affect around 1,000 patients.
Tom Felton, chief executive of the Royal Association for Deaf People in Colchester, said: "This service is only available to confirm audiology appointments, but it is very welcome especially for the improvement of audiology services and the example it sets to other hospital departments and GPs."
Meanwhile, project manager at the hospital Malcolm Harmer said audiology staff report that a high proportion of their patients have and use mobile phones.
In 2007-08, Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust dealt with a total of 305,212 outpatient attendances, as well as 69,417 inpatient and daycase admissions.
