Deafness can lead to isolation, audiologist warns

Individuals with hearing problems can become isolated from their community, according to Specsavers.
The organisation has published the findings of research into the effects of hearing loss and reveals that almost two-thirds of people have felt feelings of isolation since developing difficulties.
Specsavers audiologist Colin Campbell says: "It is really important to remove the associated stigma of old age so we have less of the population suffering from loneliness because of their hearing problems."
He adds that doing so could be managed simply if patients were provided with the proper aftercare and the correct treatment.
Around one in ten people go so far as to reject the offer of a hearing aid as they do not want to be seen wearing one, the survey notes.
The publication of the study coincides with Deaf Awareness Week, which is taking place between May 4th and 10th.
Look At Me has been selected as the theme for the week, highlighting the visual techniques - such as lip-reading and sign language - that can compensate for hearing loss.
