A new agreement between the University of Manchester and pharmaceutical firm Johnson & Johnson aims to promote proof-of-principle (PoP) research into biomedical science.
The deal is intended to boost the delivery of products and innovations by the university's scientists which hold potential benefits for the public.
Via the PoP fund, researchers can gain funding to carry their ideas beyond the PoP stage and towards being spun off as new products - something the university already budgets for itself.
The university suggests that this could lead to new therapies being developed for conditions such as Alzheimer's and diabetes.
Professor Rod Coombs, vice-president for innovation and economic development at the University of Manchester, says: "This fund will prove invaluable for scientists as they look to take their research to new levels."
The NHS notes that about 450,000 people in the UK have Alzheimer's at any one time, including around one in 1,000 people under the age of 65.
